ALTITUDE : 1600 - 2100 MASL
VARIETAL : Bourbon
PROCESS : Anaerobic Washed

Situated on the shores of Lake Kivu, Gasharu Washing Station is located near to the Nyungwe National Park, one of the largest and best preserved rainforests in Central Africa. The region’s soil, elevation and climate are perfect for growing coffee.

The Gasharu Washing Station is one of two owned and operated by Gasharu Coffee. The company was formed in 1976, when Celestin Rumenerangabo planted his first coffee trees in Nyamasheke. Since then, the business has grown considerably, to the point where today it exports beans from around 1650 different smallholder farmers.

The coffee season in Rwanda runs from February to July, and every year the company employs around 150 local people to help process the harvest.

Coffee is an important part of Rwanda’s culture and economy. Gasharu is continually improving its production methods, and encouraging curiosity and experimentation in order to produce exceptional lots.

This particular lot is named "Women's Crown" as it is solely produced and processed by women. Urugori or "women’s crown” is a crown that women in Rwanda are given after giving birth for the first time. It is a symbol of respect and recognition of their contribution to society.

The cherries are pulped and fermented in a tank for 12 hours. After that, the beans are washed and put into barrels for anaerobic fermentation for another 8 hours.
