Situated on the shores of Lake Kivu, Gasharu Washing Station is located near to the Nyungwe National Park, one of the largest and best preserved rainforests in Central Africa. The region’s soil, elevation and climate are all perfect for growing coffee.

The Gasharu Washing Station is one of two owned and operated by Gasharu Coffee. The company was formed in 1976, when Celestin Rumenerangabo planted his first coffee trees in Nyamasheke. Since then, the business has grown considerably, to the point where today it exports beans from around 1650 different smallholder farmers.

The coffee season in Rwanda runs from February to July, and every year the company employs around 150 local people to help process the harvest.

Coffee is an important part of Rwanda’s culture and economy. Gasharu is continually improving its production methods, and encouraging curiosity and experimentation in order to produce exceptional lots.

Impano, meaning 'gift', is the producer's reference to coffee being a gift that can transform a community. This particular lot has been fermented for around 100 hours to create a memorable flavour, worthy of a gift.
