Nuevo Trujillo is a community located in the Cajamarca region of Peru. This region has become popular for the volume and quality of coffee it produces, which has led to many families gaining national and international recognition for their coffees. Picorana Hill is located in Nuevo Trujillo and named for the shape of a bird's beak. The hill is surrounded by native and rural communities in favour of the conservation of the area, located in the upper part of the Quanda basin, which provides water for crops and also for the generation of electricity throughout the district. The local Association of Conservationist Producers of Picorana is responsible for promoting good practices in local agriculture, with a view to conserving forests, soil and guaranteeing the water security of its people.
Thanks to these efforts in conservation, exotic and emblematic fauna species are able to flourish in their natural habitat. The cock of the rocks for example, considered the national bird of Peru, can be found here but also, it’s possible for smallholders to grow coffee in a sustainable and progressive way. This coffee, selected from producers in the area, is named Cerro Picorana after its people and their spirit of conservation.
